A notorious backpacker enclave since the early 1980s,
Thanon Khaosan now runs the gamut from rabbit-hutch
guesthouses to the opulence of the rebuilt Buddy Lodge.
But as this ‘Freak street’ becomes a cacophonous
entertainment and shopping zone, many travelers are
opting for the quieter confines on Thanon Rambuttri
behind Wat Chanasongkharm, and Thanon Phra Arthit.
For a more Thai-style neighborhood, some prefer the
time-worn Chinese hotels huddling in the side streets
off Thanon Samsen, or in and around Dusit.
