Accommodation

Rooms and rates
Single rooms are often spacious enough for two to sleep, and doubles may well have two large beds, so ask to view rooms first. In guesthouses and chep Chinese hotels, room rates can vary widely between fan-cooled and air-conditioned, en suite or shared bathrooms, and room size. Thanks to Thai communal sleeping habits, some hotels, particularly resorts, have a few huge rooms. At smarter hotels, prices vary greatly between standard, luxury and suites. Bangkok has a habit of snaring visitors long term or attracting repeat returnees, and monthly room rates can be as low as 10,000 baht, with studios and apartments from 13,000 baht. At the other extreme, notably around Thanons Ratchadaphisek, Phetchburi Tud Mai and Surawong, and Sois Nana and Ngam Duphlee, certain discreet hotels charge by the hour.

Bookings and Background
Booking in advance is a good idea: traipsing around Bangkok’s streets with luggage can be a real drag. Though the better hotels fill up at busy times, you can always find a room in the city, such is the oversupply. Note that rates for upmarket hotels are often higher if you book within Thailand rather than from abroad. But there are always promotions, particularly for business visitors and residents.

Phra Nakorn and Banglamphu
A notorious backpacker enclave since the early 1980s, Thanon Khaosan now runs the gamut from rabbit-hutch guesthouses to the opulence of the rebuilt Buddy Lodge. But as this ‘Freak street’ becomes a cacophonous entertainment and shopping zone, many travelers are opting for the quieter confines on Thanon Rambuttri behind Wat Chanasongkharm, and Thanon Phra Arthit. For a more Thai-style neighborhood, some prefer the time-worn Chinese hotels huddling in the side streets off Thanon Samsen, or in and around Dusit.
